Renovate Enola Gay B-29 Hangar

来自 HISTORIC WENDOVER AIRFIELD INC

This hangar is on the National Register of Historic Places having national significance. It was named on the '11 most endangered historic buildings' of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This hangar is at the Wendover, Utah Army Air Force base, which is the most original remaining Army Air Force training base in the country with 85 original WW II buildings.

The foundation, Historic Wendover Airfield, has restored a number of the WW II buildings and now has a museum in the original Officer's Club, named the John T. Brinkman Club. The B-29 hangar is referred to as the 'Enola Gay' hangar because that historic aircraft was based at Wendover Airfield and the atomic mission crews trained here.

The hangar had serious structural issues after 75 years, but those issues were solved when the foundation received a 'Save America's Treasures' grant some years ago. A recent grant from the State of Utah helped with restoring the original restrooms in the hangar. Now some more significant work needs to take place. The building needs to be insulated, electrical service needs to be connected to the building, a fire sprinkler system should be installed, and interior renovations need to be completed.

This project needs $500,000 to initiate work on the areas identified.. The ultimate project to make this a truly significant museum matching its important history needs another $ 1 MM but this first phase will make the building usable by visitors. We would greatly appreciate any support that can be given to this historic project that honors our World War II veterans who sacrificed so much for our freedom.

Thank You,
Jim Petersen, President.
