Empty Stocking Fund started in 1984 when The Gazette wrote an article about a single family in need and $45,000 poured into the paper. With those dollars, 27 families received assistance that first year.
For the next 10 years, the campaign existed to raise funds for individual families in need, and in 1994 transitioned to benefit the health and human service agencies in our community. Now in its 37th year, Empty Stocking Fund has raised over 22 million dollars to benefit 20 partner agencies who serve over 250,000 individuals and families from birth to end of life.
One donation. 20 agencies. A whole community served. Administrative costs are generously covered by The Anschutz Foundation, Gazette Charities Foundation, The Gazette, El Pomar Foundation, Pikes Peak Community Foundation, and Add Staff. Thanks to their contributions, 100% of the funds raised go directly to the agencies to support our neighbors in need.
Every dollar donated to the Empty Stocking Fund grows up to 45.3 percent through matching grants.
Bruni Foundation – Matches $1 for every $10 raised up to $100,000
El Pomar Foundation – Matches $1 for every $3 raised up to $200,000
All of the money Empty Stocking Fund raises goes to the agencies as general operating money, meaning they can use it in any way needed to move their mission forward and best serve our neighbors in need.
The Empty Stocking Fund is a year-round campaign, but we do host a formal kickoff on Thanksgiving Day. The campaign runs for an additional 7 weeks and ends in January. Then we start all over again!
