Amphibian Stage is a non-profit contemporary professional theater based in Fort Worth, Texas. Our mission is 'To produce innovative and engaging theater that inspires new ideas, opens new doors and increases our understanding of the vast world around us'.
Amphibian Stage was founded by three Texas Christian University alumni who saw a need for work that explored uncharted artistic realms and sparked conversation. Amphibian Stage Productions was born in 2000 with support from the TCU Theater Department, including the use of space and equipment. Without this vital support, and that of many collaborators along the way, Amphibian would not enjoy the success it has today.
Our goals include:
• To nurture young, emerging artists and aspiring arts administrators
• To make Amphibian a hub of ideas and creative expression—a place cultural explorers call home
• To create programming that inspires people to leave their screens and share in the experience of witnessing a live performance, then to engage in deeper thought and conversation so that they know themselves and those they attended with just a little better.
• To give playwrights a safe place to develop new work that will go on to receive productions on our stage as well as on stages around the country.
• To welcome a growing number of young and diverse audiences into our theater
• To make every patron feel at home. The company believes theater should be accessible to everyone, making the patron experience of the utmost importance.
After purchasing our own building on South Main Street in the revitalized Near Southside neighborhood in 2012, Amphibian expanded our artistic contributions and community leadership.
Every year, Amphibian aims to produce four main stage contemporary plays, two to three developmental readings and workshops of new plays in a series called Metamorphosis, and a unique season extra production to nurture younger and more diverse audiences. Plays frequently feature talent from New York and around the country, a rarity among small Fort Worth theaters. We offer National Theater Live Screenings in partnership with The Modern Museum of Fort Worth. Our newest program- Comedy Residency, has been greatly successful in attracting the younger demographic in the community and garnering us attention due to the nationally recognized string of comedians who have performed on our stage.
We continue our dynamic arts education and outreach programs - Tad-Poles Stilt Dancing, launched in 2008, teaches the art, culture, and history of stilt dancing, inspired by the stilt traditions of Africa, Central and South America. The program cultivates creativity, team-work and confidence along with encouraging physical and mental well-being.
In 2018 we began work with veterans both inside and out of the criminal justice system, in collaboration with MHMR Tarrant County Veterans Services and later with DE-CRUIT and it's founder Stephan Wolfert, to give them a creative expression and healthy outlet for their energy and emotions.
All our programs reach a wide demographic with an intentional effort to be accessible to people of all races, ethnic, economic, geographic backgrounds and gender identities. As well as special groups like youth between 12-20 years, veterans including those who are incarcerated and seniors.
