Kids all over the world have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up. Whether it’s an astronaut, teacher, veterinarian, movie star, surgeon, or business owner, each kid has different hopes for the future.
When 11-year-old Kevin grows up, he wants to be like Cristiano Ronaldo, a world-renowned Portuguese soccer player. And even in the fifth grade, Kevin is working hard toward that goal!
“[Soccer] has always been my passion,” Kevin said. “When there are no classes, I am usually playing [soccer]. I am training for [soccer] during weekends. My team also participates in tournaments and leagues here in our city.”
Training that hard in any sport takes a lot of energy. That’s one reason why the meals Kevin gets from Convoy of Hope at school every day are so important. Kevin’s school in the Philippines partners with Convoy to provide daily, nutritious meals to all of their students.
“My favorite food[s are] chicken curry, pinakbet, and fried fish,” Kevin said. “I also love eating vegetables, especially alugbati (Malabar spinach) and squash.”
He said, “I noticed that I became healthier and I don’t get sick easily.” This is important for Kevin as he works hard toward his professional soccer dreams, attending practices, improving his skills, and helping his team win tournaments.
Even though soccer is always on his mind, Kevin also works hard in school and is an honor student. “My favorite subjects are English, science, and Filipino. I think all are my favorite subjects except for mathematics.”
Kevin has big goals. His passion for soccer is evident. With all the practices, games, and play time, Kevin needs energy to truly pursue his dreams. When children like Kevin are fed daily, nutritious meals through Convoy of Hope, they have the energy to not only focus in school, but to play and truly enjoy being a kid.
