FRANKLIN G BURROUGHS SIMEON B CHAPIN ART MUSEUM

The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, established in 1987 and opened
to the public in 1997, is the only art museum along South Carolina’s north coast. The Museum
staff includes an executive director and curator, five additional full-time employees, four part-
time staff members and approximately 15 active volunteers. The Museum’s Board of Trustees
currently consists of 16 board members. The executive director has been leading the organization
since 2002 and the Museum’s curator has been at her position for the past 12 years. Trustees may
serve two three-year terms.
The Art Museum views the tri-county area of Horry, Georgetown and Brunswick counties as
“our community,” and we take our responsibility to community very seriously. We recognize
that art museums are a place of adventure and discovery — a place to use the visual arts as a
learning tool.
A recent addition to our Museum’s physical facility is the Lineta Pritchard Pottery Studio, which
offers classes as well as open studio time to ceramicists of all skill and experience levels. One
full-time staff member and two part-time instructors are included in the staff information above.
Since our opening, we have presented over 300 visual arts exhibitions. Educational programs for
all ages at the Art Museum encourage and support artistic creativity, help preserve our diverse
cultural heritage and make visual arts more readily available to all. Exhibitions and educational
programming allow visitors of all ages to engage with noted and aspiring artists, musicians,
authors, historians dancers and photographers from near and far. Art classes are tailored to
children from preschool to teens, with afterschool art activities at schools and libraries around
our area, as well as summer programs at the Museum. We also offer art outreach activities to
veterans’ groups and LGBTQ families.
