MMI is a mission-driven 501c3 non-profit that provides financial counseling, coaching and education to consumers nationwide. Established in 1958, MMI is one of the largest full-service credit counseling agencies in the United States. In 2023, MMI provided services to more than 165,000 households through one-on-one financial counseling sessions, education courses, and Debt Management Plans (DMPs) that supported repayment of nearly $170MM in unsecured debt. MMI prevented 2,684 foreclosures and evictions (97% of likely foreclosures and 63% of likely evictions) and helped establish 5,323 new homeowners.
MMI is committed to serving individuals and families in financial crisis by providing financial counseling, coaching, and education services that address immediate issues and promote lasting financial wellness. MMI’s services primarily benefit clients from low- to moderate-income households and address common financial challenges, including budgeting, unsecured debt, housing, bankruptcy, disaster recovery, student loans, and more. MMI’s merger with Clearpoint Credit Counseling Solutions in early 2017 has added significantly to the housing-focused services delivered by MMI, including affordable housing programs, as well as services created specifically for Hispanics, military veterans, and older Americans.
To address the ever-evolving needs of American consumers, MMI has long embraced innovation and change, developing new programs and solutions that meet consumer needs as they arise. In 2018, in the wake of multiple natural disasters, MMI created Project Porchlight in response to a growing need from both consumers and partners for a program dedicated to providing financial guidance to disaster survivors. In 2020, MMI expanded the Porchlight program to include recovery from the economic disaster faced by many in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, MMI was awarded the 2022 BAI Global Innovation Award for Innovation in Community Disaster Recovery.
MMI is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), is the largest member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and is a HUD-approved national intermediary for housing counseling.
