Here's how the deadly Manhattan shooting unfolded

July 26: Gunman Shane Devon Tamura, from Las Vegas, drove cross-country through Colorado.
July 27: Tamura drove through Nebraska and Iowa.
4:24 p.m. on July 28: Tamura drove through New Jersey and entered New York City soon afterward.
6:28 p.m.: A 911 center began receiving calls of an active shooter inside a building at 345 Park Avenue on 52nd Street. The area is populated with many corporate offices and workers who were heading home during rush hour.
Surveillance footage shows the gunman exiting a double-parked black BMW, alone and carrying an M4 assault-style rifle.
He entered the skyscraper’s lobby, turning right and immediately opening fire on a police officer. He shot a woman who was taking cover behind a pillar, and continued “spraying (the lobby) with gunfire,” said New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
On his way to the elevator bank, he shot a security guard taking cover behind his desk, and a second man in the lobby, per his own statement from the hospital, police said. When the elevator arrived, a woman walked out, whom the gunman allowed to leave unharmed.
Tamura then went up to the 33rd floor, which is Rudin Management, and fired multiple rounds, killing one person, before shooting himself fatally in the chest.

Suspected gunman carried an M4 assault-style rifle, police commissioner says

The alleged gunman in today’s deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan was carrying an M4 rifle, according to New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Tisch did not specify whether the high-powered M4 weapon was an assault rifle capable of bursts of automatic fire, or a version more common in civilian use that requires a shooter to pull the trigger each time a round is fired.

Here's what we know about the victims of today's shooting

A total of five people were shot by the gunman in the shooting in Midtown Manhattan today, according to New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Only one person shot survived and is in critical but stable condition, Tisch said at a news conference tonight. The man is being treated at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
The victims killed include Didarul Islam, 36, a New York City Police Department officer who was an immigrant from Bangladesh. He was a father of two and his wife is pregnant with their third child, Tisch said. Islam was also taken to New York Presbyterian.
One male and one female victim were brought to Bellevue Hospital and both died, Tisch said.
The fourth fatality is a female found dead on the 33rd floor of 345 Park Avenue, Tisch said.
Four victims are being treated for “minor injuries sustained in their attempts to flee the scene,” Tisch added.
The names of the civilian victims are being withheld until their families can be notified, said the commissioner.
