Connect aims to bridge gaps in services for people with a variety of challenges.
What does this mean? It means we create programs to fill the gaps for people with disabilities.
In 2020 we began Connect: Donated Equipment Program program. People donate gently used assistive technology and mobility device to the program. Items that we accept are wheelchairs, shower benches, walkers, hospital beds, lifting devices, and much more. The items are cleaned and prepared for their new users. These items are donated back into the community free of charge.
In 2022, over 950 pieces of equipment passed through this program in both Central MN and Duluth.
Why is this program so important to the community? When a family needs these devices several items are often needed, and often insurance doesn't cover the items or it takes time for the items to be processed. Leaving a person at greater risk for injury.
Meet Al, A retired farmer, veteran, husband, father, grandpa, and active community member. When Al was diagnosed with a progressive lung condition his insurance would only pay for a walker.
Al had always been active in his community and enjoyed all family events like going to the grandkids' ball games, concerts, and birthday and anniversary gatherings. As his walking range decreased, he started to limit the events that he went to. He began to isolate himself and this affect his mental health. The doctor suggested a wheelchair, but the insurance wouldn't pay for the chair because he could still walk in his home. His family found Connect: Donated Equipment program, where they picked out a transfer wheelchair that was easy to use. Now, Al was able to attend the events that were important to him: his grandkids' weddings, birthday events, graduations, and even ball games. He was able to go to lunch with his wife and friends. He also was able to go to community festivals and participate in service club events. Al made good use of the wheelchair. Al attended many events in the last year of his life because of the COnnect: Donated Equipment Program. The wheelchair now is helping another family member as they navigate their mobility challenges.
We anticipate continued growth in 2023 and are planning for the expansion of the program in 2023.
