We envision a future where good food will not be wasted and negatively impact the environment. Where food-insecure families and individuals can thrive without worrying about where their next meal will come from. And where excess food has an easy and direct line to communities in need.
Recent studies estimate that 40% of food produced in the United States is wasted. We collect excess food that otherwise would be landfilled, and deliver it to Denver’s populations who lack sufficient food to meet basic needs. There is no cost to either the donor or the recipient agency.
WHY: We Don't Waste believes no one should go hungry. Colorado has the fastest-growing child-poverty rate in the nation (Denver Post, 4/13/2010). Poverty is often a barrier to opportunity and it is not limited to children. Almost 900,000 Coloradans struggle every day to put food on the table. Colorado has the third fastest growing rate of child poverty in the nation.
WHERE: We Don’t Waste provides food to over 55 community-based non-profit agencies providing food to children, individuals, veterans, seniors, families, and the homeless. Collectively, these agencies serve over 5,500 individuals daily. In the last two years alone, We Don’t Waste has provided over 3,000,000 servings or more than 1millon meals, and has saved over 500 tons of nutritious food from landfills.
