Occasionally, AAE takes in intact male horses (colts or stallions), donkeys (jacks), and other equine. AAE castrates (or gelds) all the boy horses before they're adopted. Castrations cost anywhere from $350 to $2500 depending on the age of the animal and the difficulty of the surgery. Young colts can be castrated in the field, while older stallions are higher risk and require hospitalization. Animals with one or two undescended testicles may require a more invasive abdominal surgery, also requiring hospitalization. Gelding ten horses cost at least $3500 (and often more, if there are complications).
