Mississippi’s Toughest Kids Foundation was founded in 2008 by Mary Kitchens as a 501(c)3 Charity. Mrs. Kitchens’ son, Dan, was diagnosed at the age of three with cancer and endured many months of aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments before being declared cancer free. As a child, Dan attended Camp Rainbow, a camp for children with cancer. His camping experiences changed his life as well as the lives of the entire Kitchens family. To this day, Dan and his two brothers serve as Camp Rainbow counselors every summer. Camp Rainbow and other established camps for special needs groups, have all faced one common problem, holding their camps in facilities ill-equipped to meet the needs of their campers. Camp Rainbow has had to move six times over the years to various camp grounds for various reasons. Other special needs groups holding camp weeks also find themselves moving year to year to different facilities. MTK’s Camp Kamassa will mean having one camp facility designed specifically to meet the needs of all these groups.
Camp Kamassa will be available for year-round use by campers affected by special needs. “Special needs” may also include children who have lost a parent, have a parent serving in the military, have an incarcerated parent, children in the foster care system, and others. The campus will also be available for day trips for nursing homes, state hospitals, adult daycare centers, Veterans Homes, etc., and for retreat rentals when facilities are not being used by special needs groups. Camp Kamassa will serve all 82 Mississippi counties. Thousands of individuals and families affected by special needs will impacted by their Camp Kamassa experience.
Everything about Camp Kamassa is accessible to everyone. The full scope of Camp Kamassa includes 8 duplex cabins, 6 family cabins, a welcome/conference center, an open-air recreation building, a cafeteria, a state-of-the-art infirmary, a multi-use activity building, a chapel, 2 lakes, hiking trails, archery range, sports field, equestrian center, ropes course, swimming pool, playground, outdoor classrooms, and more. The entrance to Camp Kamassa will boast an agri-tourism area with a general store, pumpkin patch, corn maze and Christmas Tree farm.
