When a home becomes unsafe or unhealthy, the impacts extend far beyond the walls of the house. A leaking roof can lead to mold, poor indoor air quality, and worsening respiratory conditions. Failing plumbing can expose families to unsafe or unsanitary conditions. Electrical hazards increase the risk of fire. Broken stairs, unstable porches, and inaccessible entrances create daily risks for injury. Aging furnaces, poor insulation, and drafty homes can leave families vulnerable during Pittsburgh winters while driving up utility costs.
For low- and moderate-income homeowners, these repairs are often financially impossible without support. Many homeowners have spent decades caring for their homes and contributing to their neighborhoods, but one major repair can put everything at risk. A roof, sewer line, furnace, or electrical repair can cost more than a household earns in several months. Without intervention, deferred maintenance can become a health hazard, code violation, insurance issue, displacement risk, or the beginning of a home’s decline into vacancy.
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh interrupts that cycle. By providing critical repairs at no cost to eligible homeowners, we help residents remain safely housed, preserve existing affordable homeownership, and prevent otherwise viable homes from becoming the next vacant or blighted property in the community.
Our work improves health, but it also supports economic development. Healthy neighborhoods require occupied homes, engaged residents, visible investment, and confidence in the future. When homes are repaired and occupied, neighborhoods are better positioned to attract businesses, support schools, maintain property values, and rebuild commercial corridors. Housing preservation is not separate from economic development. It is one of the building blocks that makes equitable economic growth possible.
