New Jersey’s Affordable Housing Crisis
Affordable housing is in short supply across the nation. While rents have increased steadily over the years, paychecks have not.
In order to pay the rent, 70% of New Jerseyans find themselves skimping on healthy foods, delaying preventative health care or simply “going without”.

This is not a new problem, but it takes on new meaning today because – at Bergen County’s United Way – we have found a solution.
The Solution is Simple
The solution is to build homes that people can afford.
At Bergen County’s United Way, we make it our mission to build affordable homes for seniors, veterans and adults with developmental disabilities – groups that are disproportionately impacted by high rents and are at-risk of poor health outcomes without safe and stable housing.
We have been building for 16 years and have completed 35 projects. We know how to build a project that looks good, stands the test of time and, most importantly, feels like home.
In 2022, we will complete another 4 projects increasing the number of people we serve daily to over 550.
Let’s Do This, Together
In order to meet demand, we maintain a pipeline of projects. Right now, 22 projects are in this phase waiting for sufficient capital to begin construction.
Your contribution will activate one of these projects – making affordable housing happen for those who need it most.
We know how to build. Let’s build more together.
