CARING FOR THE HOMELESS OF PEEKSKILL INC

Fred's Pantry is a program of CHHOP (Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill). Over 400 individuals access the food pantry each month, ensuring that their families obtain nutritious food, often based on immediate crisis needs. Our clients have a wide age range from young children to seniors. They are multi-ethnic, multi racial and come from varying degrees of income. Most are working people, who are having a difficult time making ends meet, as the cost of living here is very high. We have a number of veterans ranging from the Korean and Vietnam wars, through the Iran-Iraq conflicts.
Fred's is a "choice" pantry, meaning that out clients can shop with a volunteer shopping assistant, for choices available at the Pantry. We offer a selection of basic foods such as rice, bread, flour, milk, juice, eggs, poultry and fish. We have fresh fruits and vegetables available on a limited basis and we constantly aim to offer more nutritious fruits and vegetables to our clients. In many cases, support is offered on a crisis, needs basis. Our food stock comes from the local food bank, as well as community resources and donations from individuals. Fred's Pantry was named for Commander Fred London, a Green Beret Vietnam War veteran and two-time Purple Heart recipient. He was deeply committed to helping veterans and the community in which he lived.
