Horse care and rehabilitation require space. Our organization has been highly resourceful, supporting up to 14 equines at a time at our current facility. However, we have reached a point of maturity where the size of our property is inhibiting our growth and ability to serve the community to our fullest potential. Because of this dynamic, our highest priority in 2023 is securing a new facility that enables us to serve horses and people more effectively. Space comes at a cost, but we believe the investment is worth the potential impact and hope it will too! Strategic goals for the new facility:
1. Safety and inclusivity. We want SHEW to be safe and accessible year-round to people of all abilities and ages. We are passionate about our special needs friends and the elderly, alongside veterans and youth. We regret that our current facility is subject to weather and inaccessible to the elderly and special needs community during certain seasons. Our new facility will allow inclusive community programs to run throughout the year, radically increasing our ability to engage with and serve these special members of our community.
2. First-Time Adopters Boarding and Continued Education. Most rescue horses are unsuitable for novice owners, limiting the potential adopters' pool significantly and disincentivizing prospective owners from considering rescue horses. We plan to change that by offering first-time adopters on-site boarding and continued education. This program aims to share knowledge on equine care, training, and ownership and raise a new generation of informed horsemen and horsewomen while getting horses placed in healthy, equipped homes.
3. Sanctuary and Rescue. Before anything else, we are a horse rescue. The ability to offer safe haven to any horse at anytime is a calling we cannot meet due to space. While our network of amazing foster homes has worked miracles to support our team and horses in crisis, more acreage will allow us to offer sanctuary to horses with nowhere else to turn and safety to horses who have never known it.
