HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION OF HAMPTON ROADS

HDCofHR acquires and rehabs housing units to rent to low-income individuals and families. It prides itself on the QUALITY and AFFORDABILIY of its housing units. It uses HUD guidelines to determine low-income persons/families and low-income rent in order to determine what the rent should be for a specific housing unit. HDCofHR does not discriminate and it has a concern for individuals and/or families who are considered as "high barrier" for housing. High barrier refers to those individuals or families who are/have been homeless and have two or more of the following characteristics: mental health problems, felony charges, poor credit, little or no income, recent treatment for drug abuse. Risk is involved when HDCofHR or any landlord places a "high barrier" individual or family in housing. Behavior, leaving without paying the rent, extensive damage to the unit, failure to upkeep the unit, frequently yield expenditures for repairs and replacements which are over and above what was budgeted. HDCofHR's sources of revenue are rent, grants, donations and money from 2 fundraisers. These monies cover normal and in part extraordinary , unexpected expenses. HDCofHR is a small nonprofit run by volunteers. It owns and rents a 13-unit apartment building, a duplex, a condominium and 16-single family houses. All day-to-day work is provided by the Board of Directors, applying for loans, overseeing what is managerial and operational, fundraising, financial management, friend raising, providing accountability reports is uncompensated except for the satisfaction derived from knowing that people are living in quality, affordable housing. Affordable housing is a MUST for the growing population of at-risk and homeless individuals and families.
The number of unhoused people is on the rise again, and there is a huge shortage of affordable housing units across the country for people on fixed incomes, low-income, the disabled, many retirees, and the homeless.
