The steeple of our majestic Old Congregational Church building is a reminder to many that great things can be accomplished by donations of time, skills, equipment, and money IN ANY AMOUNT.
In 2007, the steeple was in significant disrepair, losing a panel during a storm. With donations of materials, equipment, and hundreds of volunteer hours, the steeple was removed, repaired on the ground, and replaced in 2009. The restoration was completed for significantly less out-of-pocket cost (under $3,000) than the estimate of over $100,000!
The long overdue maintenance of the steeple became possible in 2024. Through a non-profit discount on a 135 ft lift by Milton Rents of Gorham, NH, and dividing the project into two phases, we were able to move forward. The first phase completed the maintenance and painting of the spire panels of the steeple in July! It didn't exactly go as anticipated...though care was taken to view the condition of the panels, weathervane, and ball through drones and binoculars, when the work began it was determined there was significant deterioration of the panels.
Replacement panels along with their corner moldings were fabricated on site, then before installation each panel and molding received two coats of primer and paint on the underside, two coats of primer and one of paint on the surface. Before they were installed, the framing was "beefed-up". After installation, all joints were caulked before all surfaces received a second coat of paint. The ball and weathervane on the very top of the spire were historically reproduced in wood in 2009. Each was examined and minor repairs were completed prior to their painting, sealing and installation.
The costs of this project involved more than the budgeted funds, too! We had to spend the funds earmarked for the second phase of the project - $10,000. Through generous donors we have recovered approximately 40% for which we're very grateful! Our goal still remains to complete the painting of the lower section of the steeple during Vermont's 2025 warmer weather season.
