Heart of the Valley Animal shelter is the community animal welfare shelter serving Gallatin and Madison Valleys in Montana. We are an open admission shelter which means that we take in any dog or cat that comes to the shelter regardless of circumstance or condition.
We do not euthanize because of lack of space or time in the shelter. Animals are brought to the shelter as owner surrenders, strays, transfers from other shelters or through local animal control. Each year, we take in and care for thousands of animals. After allowing the animals a few days to adjust to being in a shelter environment, the animals are medically and behaviorally assessed. Before being placed for adoption, they are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered.
In addition to returning lost pets to their grateful owners and finding homeless dogs and cats a new home, we are also committed to promoting humane education, behavioral consultations and training which is focused on keeping pets in their homes. We focus humane education on children through our summer Pet Pals camp.
We are also committed to helping control the feral cat population and offer low or no cost spays/neuters through our Splay/Neuter Assistance (SNAP) clinics and Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) programs.
We offer special programs that are designed to work with specific groups within our community. For example, we celebrate the service of local military veterans by offering no cost adoptions through our Pets and Vets program. We also offer our Warriors with Heart program which pairs a shelter dog with a disabled veteran to be specially trained and certified as a service dog. In recognition that senior adults are often on a fixed income, we offer a Companion Cat for Seniors program with no cost adoptions of cats.
Nearly 80% of our funding comes from contributions and we are committed to being good stewards of the funds donated. Almost 78% of funds raised goes toward animal care. We have a three star rating from Charity Navigator and a Platinum Rating from Guidestar.
