NOURISH PIERCE COUNTY

When individuals and families find themselves without food, Nourish is there for them in their time of need, thanks to the generosity of donors.

In 2023 alone, Nourish Pierce County helped meet basic food needs for 57,913 unduplicated guests or 383,202 visits to our food banks. This is about 6% of the entire population of Pierce County and about 60% of all food-insecure people in the county. In 2023, Nourish distributed 5,142,997 pounds of food to people in need—enough to make 3,448,818 meals. This would not have been possible without nearly 500 volunteers, who served 40,551 hours last year, and more than 1,000 donors who contributed financially.

Incorporated in 1982, Nourish Pierce County is the oldest and largest food bank organization in Pierce County. Nourish serves at 21 different locations with sites open at least one day Monday through Saturday. This includes 6 brick and mortar food banks and 15 sites served by our two award-winning mobile food banks. Our mobile food banks distribute at partner sites, which include most of our public community college, technical school campuses, UW Tacoma, and at several local churches. Our goal is to provide each individual and family with enough food to make at least three meals a day for three days. Nourish operates on a self-select model, allowing clients to “shop” for and select foods that best meet their cultural and dietary needs. While clients are asked to limit their visits to once a week, no one in need is ever turned away.

Nourish impacts the community by helping provide the most basic need--balanced, nutritious food for families and individuals. Nourish serves the underemployed, unemployed, children, seniors, active-duty military, veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, individuals with disabilities, and many hard-working families who are often times just a paycheck away from losing everything.
