The Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) was founded in 1987 as the Physically Challenged Ski Program of Crested Butte, when a small but passionate group of residents spearheaded the program with the intent of providing ski instruction and equipment to individuals with disabilities on their home mountain. In that first year, 33 participants received lessons from an all-volunteer staff. Since then, the ASC has evolved to serve a wide variety of individuals with different abilities, including participants impacted by cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, visual and hearing impairments, post-traumatic stress disorder, Down syndrome, autism, attention deficit disorder, learning differences, youth at-risk, and burn survivors. On any given day, a child with a rare mitochondrial disorder might sit side-by-side on a fit-up bench and share a laugh with a veteran battling post-traumatic stress.
The ASC is now a leading therapeutic outdoor adventure program that operates year-round, with adaptive sport activities ranging from mountain biking and skiing to rock climbing and paddling. The ASC serves nearly 1,000 individuals annually in 6,000 activities. The successful programs the ASC provides are inclusive to families and friends, empower our participants in their daily lives, and have a positive and enduring effect on self-efficacy, health, independence and overall well-being.
