Moïse Mugenyi arrived in Brazil when he was 11 years old, fleeing from hunger and armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Africa, together with his mother and brothers. Thirteen years later, he was begging for his life while five men beat him mercilessly in the neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca, in the west of Rio de Janeiro.He was savagely attacked last week when he went to the kiosk where he worked to collect two days’ work, equivalent to 200 reais (about $37). According to him, when his nephew went to claim the money, the owner of the establishment took a piece of wood to attack him. We cannot stay silent in the face of racial injustice whether it is within our own communities or outside of them. No one should feel threatened or afraid because of the color of their skin, or who they are, or who they choose to be. We all have a responsibility to end discrimination and intolerance — and to seek justice, reconciliation, and healing. We stand with the family of Moise and the countless other families and communities who have suffered discrimination, hatred, or racial violence.
