The Whatcom Peace & Justice Center (WPJC) works to create a voice for peace and social justice in Whatcom County through partnerships with local community and religious organizations, direct action, public witness, and education on alternatives to violence and war. We call on our government and society to disavow policies of violence and seek a culture of peace. Additionally, the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center works as a community hub, movement incubator and resource center for activists of all ages in Whatcom County. We are a small, but fierce volunteer-powered nonprofit that connects the work for peace and social justice at home with a global perspective.
Projects and resources sponsored by the WPJC:
-Lending Library & office space
Over 900 peace and justice titles available to borrow in an honor system. Community members can also book our space or materials for their next meeting or demonstration.
- International Day of Peace
In solidarity with people around the world, the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center (WPJC) hosts an annual International Day of Peace celebration every September 21. It is a day for people worldwide to envision what our world can look like without weapons, violence, and oppression. The day has been recognized by the United Nations since 1982, and the City of Bellingham since 2010.
- Whatcom Civil Rights Project:
Working through a network of local volunteers and attorneys, the Whatcom Civil Rights Project (WCRP) fights to break down the barriers that divide people into "us" and "them. Founded in 2001 on the initiative of attorney Breean Beggs, WCRP is a joint endeavor of LAW Advocates and the Whatcom Peace & Justice Center. "
-Alternatives to Military Service
Alternatives to Military Service Alternatives to Military Service seeks to dispel the myth that you need to join the military to serve your country and pay your way through college. With the support of our veteran volunteers, we discuss the truth of military recruitment with local youth and share information on local and national resources for scholarships, professional apprenticeships and other educational opportunities.
