From Drought to Floods, Convoy’s Work in Kenya Continues

efter CONVOY OF HOPE

May 1, 2024 | 4:35 p.m.

Convoy of Hope is working in Kenya to alleviate the suffering of those who have lost everything in the flash floods in late April. Convoy has distributed food, blankets, mattresses, and more to families in desperate need.

The nation is experiencing the effects of a weather event called the Indian Ocean Dipole. This weather pattern — combined with El Nino patterns — can create unusually heavy rainfall.

In Kenya, 37 of the 48 counties have reported flash floods. These floods have displaced more than 190,000 people, destroyed agricultural land, and damaged roads and bridges. This cuts off access to markets and disrupts the normal delivery of goods and services that communities rely on.

In Nairobi, the capital, many roads are closed and traffic has come to a complete standstill, stranding many people overnight and forcing others to be rescued from rising flood waters.

Convoy is working with our Kenya team and local partners to analyze needs and distribute relief supplies.
