With over 145 certified volunteer pet therapy teams, C.A.T. provides free, comforting therapy dog visits to more than 70,000 people each year across South Florida’s tri-county area.
We recruit, evaluate, certify, mentor and deploy volunteer handlers and their friendly, trained dogs to serve a wide range of individuals, including at-risk youth, hospital patients, isolated seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and those facing mental or behavioral health challenges. Visits take place in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, treatment centers, foster care facilities, and more. Wherever there’s a need for emotional support, C.A.T. teams are there, offering a moment of joy, a sense of calm, and a reminder that no one is alone.
Our programs are designed to meet the needs of the community and include Canine Comfort visits to uplift spirits and let people know they're not alone, Leashes for Literacy to help students improve their reading skills with the help from a nonjudgmental companion, Paws to De-Stress visits to promote mental wellness and stress relief at college campuses and corporate settings, and our Mental Health and Trauma Response program to provide immediate support during times of crisis or trauma.
Whether it’s easing a patient’s anxiety before a medical procedure, sparking a memory in someone with dementia, or encouraging a struggling student to read, C.A.T. therapy dogs have a remarkable ability to connect with people in ways words often can’t. Their presence brings light, laughter, and healing into spaces that need it most.
As an AKC-approved organization and one of the premier pet therapy organizations in South
Florida, C.A.T. upholds the highest standards of safety and professionalism. All therapy dogs have obtained their Canine Good Citizen certification, been evaluated for temperament and, when working with children, must pass an advanced evaluation. Handlers undergo Level II background screenings, and all volunteers are covered under the organization’s liability insurance. We also ensure annual animal vaccinations to satisfy State standards and train our volunteers in HIPAA requirements.
At its core, Canine Assisted Therapy is about community, compassion, and connection - and the belief that sometimes, the best kind of therapy has four legs and a wagging tail.
