Pennsylvania Canal Lock #4 park (to be built as a special feature along the riverfront trail)

efter PRESERVATION PITTSBURGH

In 2018, Preservation Pittsburgh assumed the project leadership of the decade-long effort to reconstruct Pennsylvania Canal Lock #4 as a bike and walking trail feature. The canal stones were unearthed by PennDOT in 1987 during the construction of the Veterans Bridge. We have obtained a concept design from the noted local design firm of Rothschild Doyno Collaborative (RDC). This preliminary concept design for a park with proposed siting along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in the shadow of the Veterans Bridge was presented to major stakeholders. During 2020 we will continue to reach out to other stakeholders and are seeking grants to fund the next phase of development, which includes developing the concept design for the Canal Stones park, including a feasibility analysis of construction and maintenance costs.

The Canal Stones Lock #4 park would give visitors a richer look into the past and to provide trail enhancement using the park as a unique stop along the trail.
