Incredible Time Together (IT2) is a community‑based cultural program designed to support the emotional stability, dignity, and social connection of Japanese‑speaking older adults living in Nassau County, NY. Many seniors in this community face language barriers, cultural isolation, and limited access to programs that reflect their identity and lived experience. IT2 creates a warm, culturally familiar space where participants can relax, express themselves, and reconnect with others.
The program centers on guided conversations, gentle cultural rituals, and shared creative activities that help participants feel seen, valued, and emotionally grounded. Each session is intentionally designed to create a sense of “a place to return to”—a space where older adults can experience joy, belonging, and emotional safety.
Currently, IT2 is offered in small‑group circles held in community locations such as malls, senior centers, and public spaces. Sessions include culturally familiar practices such as seasonal reflections, storytelling, simple movement, and language‑based activities that encourage memory, connection, and emotional expression. The atmosphere is calm, welcoming, and relational, emphasizing presence over performance.
In the future, IT2 will expand to include:
Regular weekly circles across multiple community sites
Workshops and cultural programs co‑created with seniors
Intergenerational gatherings connecting older adults with younger community members
Training opportunities for caregivers and community workers
Collaborations with local organizations to build sustainable cultural support systems
The project will continue to be presented as live, in‑person community sessions, supported by simple printed materials, light documentation, and occasional digital storytelling to share the program’s impact. IT2 is not a performance but a social practice art project—a living, evolving cultural space shaped by the people who gather within it.
Through this work, IT2 aims to build a more connected, culturally responsive community where older adults can experience dignity, joy, and meaningful human connection.
