My work primarily focuses on highlighting and giving voice to South Asian minorities in the US throuogh the medium of film. I’ve found it extremely important to have representation in pop culture and media so that South Asians can feel like they belong. A lot of my writing and work tends to be around identity/coming of age style stories that also help others to understand some of the challenges and tribulations of assimilation in society – of not fully belonging to one singuular place.
This is a short film we’re working to raise funds for with the end goal being to submit to a few film festivals and also screen locally (not for profit) to our community. The current project is called Skin Deep, is roughly about 15 minutes, and follows an Indian American HS senior on a pivotal day as he tries to get invited to a party and ultimately, accepted by the people he wants to fit in with for better or worse. This all takes place against a backdrop of what it means to hold onto a piece of your cultuure even when it doesn’t seem like the “cool thing to do”.
Our goal is to continue to develop similarly thematic stories over time wiith the help and contributions of our community.
