For 52 years, TROT has been enriching the lives of individuals living with disabilities using equine-assisted activities and therapies to improve physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. Individuals participating at TROT live with physical and developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, traumatic brain injury, amputations, depression, anxiety, Down’s Syndrome, and other special needs. TROT is a leader in innovative programs and is known and respected nationally as a Premier Accredited Center by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship.
TROT programs include:
a) Therapeutic Riding Programs: adaptive riding instruction for children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities.
b) Equine-Assisted Learning: an experiential learning approach that promotes the development of life skills for educational, professional, and personal goals through equine-assisted activities.
c) Equine-Assisted Counseling: an experiential form of counseling that includes horses to achieve personal and emotional growth.
d) Heroes & Horses: a program specifically designed to address the needs of veterans and first responders living with physical and emotional challenges. To honor these participants, Heroes & Horses is provided at no cost to veterans and first responders.
All of TROT’s programs are adaptable and inclusive for those who use a wheelchair for mobility by utilizing a mechanical lift that provides a smooth, safe, and efficient way to mount the horse. In 2025, TROT served 236 individuals representing 18 different zip codes in Pima County. More than 200 volunteers per week assist in program activities on the property totaling more than 7,000 volunteer hours. TROT has provided services for many groups including: the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind, Tu Nidito, The Autism Society of Southern Arizona, Sunnyside School District, and Mirasol Recovery Center. Each collaboration and partnership have proven to be successful and a beneficial therapeutic resource in our community.
Over the years, TROT has served thousands of riders and is dedicated to empowering the most vulnerable individuals to achieve life-changing goals and a more independent and self-sufficient life through the power of horses.
