Sponsor An Unmarked Veteran's Gravestone - Phase Three: A Monumental Challenge 2025
por PIONEER DARLong ago when several of our military veterans passed, gravestones were not placed to commemorate their lives or service. These veterans served in the Civil War, Indian War, Spanish-American War, WWI, and WWII, yet their burials remained unmarked. They were forgotten. Years passed until Pioneer Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), researched and applied for appropriate memorials from Veterans Affairs (VA). Once approved, the VA engraves and ships these marble memorials at no cost. Boise Valley Monument Company, a local memorial designer and installation company, is generously installing the monuments at cost; however, that expense of installation is the financial responsibility of Pioneer Chapter. We are looking for a financial donor to help support the remaining costs of installation for 30 unmarked veteran's gravesites, totaling $8250.
Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise, Idaho, is the final resting place of 2000 veterans. Since 2023, Pioneer Chapter has researched the identities of 81 unmarked graves. Of those, we have applied for memorials from the VA, and helped fund the installation of 41 markers in partnership with Boise Valley Monument Company. Still today, 40 veterans remain interred in unmarked gravesites. We have secured funding to help sponsor 10 stones through a generous donation recently made by Idaho’s Combat Wounded Veterans Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Pioneer Chapter seeks the assistance of a financial donor to help honor the final 30 unmarked veterans buried in Field of Honor 1. This will complete our goal of having 100 percent of all eligible previously unmarked veterans in military sections of Morris Hill Cemetery honored with a VA-approved memorial installed at their final resting place. Each remaining memorial costs $275 to install by Boise Valley Monument Co. Completing our final goal of installing the 40 the remaining unmarked veterans’ graves will require $8,250 (excluding the 10 sponsored by Idaho’s Combat Wounded Veterans Military Order of the Purple Heart).
Pioneer Chapter is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. We can promise that your donation will stand the test of time, and be cared for by Pioneer Chapter, Boise Parks & Recreation, as well as many nonprofit groups who help maintain the veteran burials in Morris Hill Cemetery. Over the years to come we will level, edge, and gently clean the memorials, with utmost respect, love and care. Your veterans will be honored and will not be forgotten.
