Who we are and what we do!
The GFWC Orlando Junior Women’s Club is a not for profit volunteer service organization. Established in 1946 under the name of Sorosis of Orlando, our club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, one of the world’s largest and oldest women’s volunteer organizations working locally in more than 6,500 clubs in the United States and globally in more than 20 countries. We offer caring women an opportunity for fellowship, leadership training, and personal growth. We welcome guest at all meetings. We meet the third Thursday of every month at the 5901 S. Orange Ave. at the corner of Orange & Oakridge. (Except for May, we have an Awards Dinner - June & July we don’t meet & December, we have a holiday dinner at a member’s home).
Over the past few years, OJWC has been hard at work touching the lives of children, men and women through the organizations listed below:
A Gift For Teaching – Donated over 4,000 pairs of new Socks & Underwear for children in need.
Adopt A Family – More than $400 in Toys, Clothing, and Food for a struggling family of four
American Cancer Society - $50 Donation for Breast Caner Research
Angel Flight - $100 Donation toward Flights for critical ill people
Best Friends Animal Society - $500 to support a one dog for a year as well as clinic items
Boys & Girls Club – Donation of an Apple Computer for after school programs
Carver Middle School - $1,000 Donation to purchase band equipment
Central Florida Pregnancy Center - $500 Donated for informative flyers to distribute to schools
Central Florida Zoo - $50 Donation towards “Animal Lover” program
Central Florida Squeeze Youth Baseball Team - $1,000 towards goal of $25,000 to visit the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown
Coalition for Central Florida Homeless – Donated over $1,000 in new clothing & tote bags for 40 children
Community Coordinated Care for Children - $50 Donation toward Parents & Children’s Day & over 200 tote bags & over 1000 diapers.
Community Care for the Elderly – New refrigerator for home delivered frozen meals & emergency fund bills $1,000
Covenant house - $300 in prepaid gift cards towards shoes & clothes
Crisis Nursery – Donated over 300 New Baby Outfits and more than 1000 diapers. We will also spend $150 on coloring books and art supplies.
Crown of Glory Lutheran Church & Precious Gems Pre School - $500 towards building expansion
Dr. Phillips HS Theater Magnet Costuming Department – Donated a Serger machine to help make costumes & sign to place at the main entrance about upcoming shows $2,300
Dr/ Phillips YMCA Youth Scholarship Campaign - $1,750 towards swim lessons, summer camp, Y soccer team, Camp Wewa
Easter Seals Campaign – Spent $2,500 on 200 twin matching blankets for Camp Challenge
Edgewood Children’s Ranch – Donated a new Dyson DC17 Vacuum valued at $500
Epilepsy Assoc. of Central Florida – Purchase bicycle helmets for children at Safety First Program $1,500
Habitat Build – $300 for new bedding
Hacienda House – Donation of $300 for operating cost
Harbor House - $100 Donation provides 2 nights at a safe shelter for domestic abuse victim
Health Central School Nurse Program – Dr. Phillips Elem. School Nurse Mary! – Donated $500 towards a school nurse
Hurricane Catrina Fund - Sent a check to an individual who lost everything and had no insurance. Sent a $500 check to Slidell, LA for Christmas gifts for the children of Slidell. Sent a $300 check for the relief fund.
Lisa Merlin House – $100 in personal hygiene items for women recovering from alcoholism and substance abuse
Muscular Dystrophy – Professional fees for initial diagnostic workup at MDA clinic $250
Neighborhood Center - $100 in personal hygiene items for this emergency shelter.
Pine Castle Community Service Center – Donated $600 towards chairs and food for their pantry as well as $5,000 in new clothing. Sent a check for $500 as a thank you for the use of the club house.
Pine Castle Woman’s Club House – Donated $2,000 in general improvements & furniture
Ronald McDonald House - $250 donated in detergent, umbrellas, coffee. The club also made dinner twice for the families.
Shingle Creek Elementary School – $738.90 will be donated to purchase band instruments
St. Luke’s United Methodist Church / Interface Hospitality Network - $400 towards new bedding & toiletries
Teen Parent West - $200 Donation toward science projects for the alternative education program
The Russell Home for Atypical Children - $1,500 was donated for general monthly expenses
