CCSC's Workforce Training program is a creative solution to the interwoven problems of unemployment, hunger, & homelessness. We focus on 3 core values: financial self-sufficiency, personal development, & economic mobility. CCSC's approach addresses the root causes of poverty rather than symptoms. We do more than hand someone a fish - we teach students how to clean, cook & sell fish! Our holistic program addresses the whole person - mind & body. In addition to culinary "hard skills" - knife dexterity & techniques - we also train students in 'soft skills': working well with others, coping with stress, and having the mental/physical stamina demanded by the culinary industry. Our program encompasses "front to back of the house" training, as well as: job-readiness skills, relapse prevention services and counseling, goal setting, & job placement assistance. We can refer students to other resources, such as: secure housing, food assistance, low interest business loans, and tutoring. CCSC's objective is that graduates have living wage jobs with career potential (vs. minimum wage jobs) as well as the skills, mindset, & opportunity to thrive.
Candidates for CCSC's Workforce training are adults from Mecklenburg County and the surrounding region who have experienced barriers to employment (including lack of skills/education, incarceration, addiction, and homelessness) or individuals who simply need a second chance. All must have a desire to work & show commitment to making positive changes in their lives.
We serve adults 18-65 years old (majority 25-55), including military veterans. Currently: 55% female, 40% male, 5% non-binary; 80% African American, 10% Latinx, 3% Asian, 7% white. 33% have been incarcerated or are in recidivism prevention programs. 10% live in shelters, transitional housing or on friends’ sofas. 14% are in recovery or substance use programs. 19% are single parents or responsible for children living at home. 33% qualify for public assistance through county or state programs. (Reported stats from 3 most recent classes). Most of our students are considered at poverty level or low-moderate income, according to Federal poverty guidelines. Many are chronically unemployed due to a history of trauma, environments fostering unhealthy choices, & unstable housing. A major threat to long-term success is risk of succumbing to environmental peer pressure & returning to previous survival patterns. CCSC provides a supportive environment where students learn new skills & build the confidence they need to get a good job & to face life's challenges.
