Unaka Community Facility Improvement Project
por UNAKA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CLUB INCWe are a community organization located in rural western North Carolina. Our area is comprised of families and school age children, seniors and veterans. We are 15 miles from the town of Murphy NC. We were organized in the 1970's and have worked to provide social, recreational and educational opportunities to our community.
We managed through Covid by distributing 250-280 weekly food boxes with produce, protein and dairy to members of the Unaka, Grape Creek and Beaverdam communities in WNC. We have partnered with Rotary and Veterans organizations in our area to support their activities and outreach.
We recently started a year long project to identify and remove garbage and debris for longstanding dump sites in this area. We have already remove 2400 pounds of trash, old tires and appliances from the roadways. We cover40 miles of roadside trash pickup quarterly.
Our facility serves as a Senior Center and Nutrition Center three days a week. The Center is staffed and allows for community members to gather and socialize with games, crafts and song. A hot lunch is provided to those at the Center and we deliver a meal to seniors who are unable to travel to the Center. We have high speed internet service available, which can be difficult to access in this rural and mountainous region.
Our facility is 50 years old and upkeep and maintance over the years has been as the need arises or emergencies occur.
We have identified a project to strip and resurface the concrete slab in the main portion of the facility. There a several layers of old material on the surface of the slab an it is peeling over a significant portion of the floor. We are hoping to include striping of the floor for a pickle ball court to be used for recreation by members of the community.
