Accelerating Educator Effectiveness in the Los Angeles Region
por NEW TEACHER CENTERSince 2003, NTC has provided research-based professional development and coaching to thousands of educators in the greater Los Angeles region. Over this time, NTC has supported Los Angeles communities to build and sustain Optimal Learning Environments, implement new curricula, and develop equity-grounded mindsets necessary for teaching and learning to flourish.
NTC’s programming in the Los Angeles region includes:
- Professional Learning Systems: The next frontier of NTC’s work, which will be piloted in LA County, explores how we support partners to create Optimal Learning Ecosystems. In Optimal Learning Ecosystems, all components of a system are aligned to students’ most pressing needs and work in tandem to create the conditions necessary for educators and students to thrive. - Curriculum Implementation: We believe that the adoption of high-quality instructional materials presents a unique opportunity to empower educators to use curriculum as one of many tools for equity in the classroom. NTC provides curriculum implementation support through training, professional learning, and resource development to ensure a smooth transition.
- Teacher Induction and Instructional Coaching: NTC’s coaching model is grounded in best practices in adult learning theory, including a focus on real-world application and job-embedded support. We believe that support for educators must be ongoing – not a one-and-done professional learning experience – and focused on cycles of continuous improvement.
- Direct-to-Educator: The most effective professional learning supports teachers to regularly reflect on their own experiences and develop an understanding of who their students are in and outside of school. NTC offers teachers the Direct-to-Educator (DTE) experience, opening access to world-class experts to inspire change in practice. DTE provides a personalized, online platform for teachers to build their skills and knowledge of self and students.
Our partners in the Los Angeles region include:
- Bright Star Schools: Bright Star began a partnership with NTC in 2014 to develop a high-quality teacher induction program. Since that time, NTC has provided ongoing training and support to Bright Star’s new teacher mentors as well as culturally relevant and equity-focused professional learning to educators across the charter network. Bright Star also participated as a pilot site in NTC’s Direct-to-Educator learning experience, providing crucial data and feedback that has allowed the organization to refine this offering.
- Hacienda La Puente USD: HLPUSD has partnered with NTC to deliver research-based professional development to mentors across the district since 2003. Thanks to this long standing partnership, HLPUSD now independently runs its own teacher induction programming as a sustaining member with NTC.
- Los Angeles USD: NTC has partnered with LAUSD since 2011. Over the course of this partnership, NTC developed and implemented tools and processes to develop highly qualified teacher leaders, mentors, and school administrators across the district. LAUSD continues to utilize NTC’s proven model of support in their induction programs and training for their new teacher mentors.
- Palos Verdes Peninsula USD: NTC has supported the South Bay Consortium Teacher Induction Program at Palos Verdes Peninsula USD since 2012, providing professional development for new teacher mentors to a consortium of schools across the South Bay. Since that time, PVPUSD has built the capacity to sustain NTC’s teacher induction model and continues to provide ongoing training and support to their new teacher mentors. NTC and PVPUSD are also launching a Professional Learning Systems partnership beginning in Spring/Summer 2024, which will support the district to develop an Optimal Learning Ecosystem that cultivates the whole child at every level of the system.
- Partnership for Los Angeles Schools: NTC and the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools launch its partnership In 2023, focused on the successful implementation of the Odell High School Literacy curriculum. NTC provided consultative services to Partnership for LA Schools leaders to support vision and goal-setting, implementation planning, content design, and progress monitoring throughout the curriculum adoption process. NTC also provides customized professional development to high school ELA educators to provide the knowledge and skills they need to effectively utilize the new curriculum as a tool for equity to meet diverse learners’ needs.
- Green Dot Public Schools: NTC’s partnership with Green Dot Public Schools began in 2023. NTC worked closely with the program leaders at the start of the partnership to define a long-term strategy for early career teachers, as well as develop system-wide metrics to evaluate progress. NTC currently provides customized professional learning opportunities to new teacher mentors across the charter network.
