The Canal Baseball Academy (CBA) is a non-profit co-ed baseball program for under-served boys and girls in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood, offering year round access to baseball instruction, skills camp and games.
The Canal is home to more than 1000 boys and girls between the ages of five and twelve, but the neighborhood has always been underrepresented in San Rafael Little League. CBA will change that. It will provide Canal boys and girls with the skills and resources they’ll need to become part of a baseball community that stretches across several generations and has the power to bridge economic, social and cultural divides.
At CBA, baseball is more than a game. It teaches valuable life lessons like self-esteem, teamwork and respect. The goal of the program is to teach the basics of baseball, while also encouraging boys and girls from the Canal to participate in San Rafael Little League and to build new friendships, both in their community and beyond.
Founder and Director Kevin Loughlin believes the memories formed on the baseball diamond can shape a child’s life for years to come. He’s kept in touch with many of the kids he coached over the years and often he hears the same things: “My years playing Little League were some of the best of my life” and “I met my best friends on the Little League field.” Now it’s time to create those same baseball memories in the Canal.
CBA is trying to raise enough money to ensure that no child who would like to participate will be left out.
