GivingTuesday2025_ Sudan Response Programs

przez Islamic Relief USA

This Giving Tuesday, we are turning our focus to Sudan—a humanitarian crisis the world cannot afford to ignore. Since conflict erupted in April 2023, millions of families have been displaced, hospitals have been destroyed, and basic necessities have become increasingly out of reach. Today, 30.4 million people need humanitarian assistance, 12 million have been displaced, and 21 million face acute food insecurity, while deadly outbreaks of malaria, cholera, measles, and severe malnutrition continue to spread.
In the midst of this emergency, your support is helping families survive. Islamic Relief USA and its partners are delivering urgent food supplies, plastic sheeting, water buckets, and non-food item kits to families who have lost everything. Medical support has reached six hospitals through the provision of essential medicines, cash assistance for medical needs, and treatment programs for malnourished children. Water and hygiene interventions continue to provide hygiene kits, tens of thousands of bars of soap, and clean water access to vulnerable communities. Protection and psychosocial sessions offer children safe spaces to heal, while the rehabilitation of Bahri Teaching Hospital has restored critical health services for more than 1.5 million people.
Two years into the conflict, Sudan is now facing one of the world’s worst hunger crises, with famine spreading rapidly. Nearly 25 million people—over half the population—are experiencing acute food shortages. Extreme violence against civilians and humanitarian aid workers has escalated, with hundreds killed in recent weeks alone. As a result, vital aid operations have been suspended in several regions, pushing families even closer to catastrophe.
Stories from survivors reveal the human toll behind the numbers. Hiba, a 45-year-old mother who fled to a camp in eastern Sudan after attacks destroyed her community, shared the desperate conditions she and her children endure. “I know that at least five people have died of hunger in the camp,” she said. “Before the war, my life was sustainable and easy, but now conditions are very bad. I survive on one meal a day—flour mixed with water and sugar. I give most of it to my children, but it’s not enough. They get sick more, and they are getting lighter and weaker. I am losing weight too, and my dress doesn’t fit anymore. I worry the situation will continue, and my children and I will get weaker and weaker.”
Despite the ongoing challenges in delivering aid, IRUSA has continued to reach communities with life-saving assistance. Over the past two years, our teams and partners have distributed food aid to 7,000 people, provided clean water to 74,320 people, and delivered hygiene kits, NFI kits, and dignity kits to thousands of families. Hygiene promotion sessions reached 17,550 people, while 50,000 people gained access to medical care and psychosocial support. Farmers received seeds, tools, and livestock to support long-term recovery, benefiting 31,460 individuals, and 16,695 people participated in climate awareness programs. Cash assistance supported 34,590 people, vocational training empowered 520 individuals, and temporary shelter was provided to 4,380 people.
