United Way of Central Washington uses a holistic approach to help the community. A family experiencing intergenerational poverty doesn’t have one singular area they need support in, but many. First and foremost, we need to support their physiological needs: clothes, shelter, food, sleep, etc. Then there are safety needs: security, health, and employment. As these needs are met with dignity, people build esteem and confidence. This translates into job security, motivation, a feeling of accomplishment, and self-sufficiency which breaks the cycle of poverty. Then those who have “broken out” achieve self-actualization, giving back to the community that once helped them. United Way is able to look at root causes in order to strategically partner with other non-profit organizations to encourage a holistic support network for the community. This is done by providing direct services such as access to the HELP Center, The Imagination Library, VolunteerCentralWA.com, and partnering with over 40 local agencies by providing over 54 programs through these partnerships to support the critical needs of children and their parents or caregivers.
