Hometown Hero Outdoors – Outdoor Adventures

przez HOMETOWN HERO OUTDOORS

The Outdoor Adventures program provides military service members, veterans, and first responders with life-changing outdoor experiences, including activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping. These adventures are designed not only to promote physical well-being but also to foster mental health healing, community connection, and the development of strong, supportive relationships. Outdoor recreation is widely recognized as an effective therapeutic tool for addressing mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Time spent in nature can significantly lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and has been shown to improve mood and reduce symptoms of PTSD, which are prevalent in the populations we serve (Barton & Pretty, 2010; Hansen et al., 2017).

Beyond just alleviating mental health struggles, our program provides a space for participants to rebuild relationships with themselves and others. The shared experiences in nature foster deeper connections and provide opportunities for social support, which is critical in preventing isolation—a key factor in the mental health crises faced by veterans and first responders. Studies show that strong social connections and positive relationships are crucial in reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, making community-building a core component of our work (Wang et al., 2015).

By offering veterans, service members, and first responders the chance to reconnect with nature and each other, we aim to repair and strengthen relationships, provide a sense of belonging, and ultimately help prevent suicides. The average cost per participant for these transformative experiences is between $75 and $100, which includes necessary equipment, permits, transportation, and expert guidance. These funds are an investment in the mental health and long-term resilience of those who have dedicated their lives to serving our communities and country.

Goal:
To offer military service members, veterans, and first responders opportunities to reconnect with nature, each other, and themselves, fostering mental health recovery, building strong relationships, and preventing suicide. By engaging in these outdoor activities, participants gain the support and strength needed to overcome the unique challenges they face and create lasting connections that enhance their resilience.
