przez ACCESS ABILITY WISCONSIN

What sets us apart is our commitment to empowerment through leadership. Central to our program is a dedicated team of volunteers, many of whom are individuals with mobility challenges themselves. This distinctive aspect not only enhances the social connections among the participants we serve but also fosters a sense of connection among our volunteers. By actively involving individuals with mobility challenges in leadership roles, we not only empower them but also inspire others to recognize and embrace their abilities. These volunteers play a vital role in ensuring that our programs are inclusive and create the most impact.

Individuals create social connections in many ways. One of the most common ways is through connecting about a common interest. We are hoping to expand the types of programs we offer based on different interests. For example, many older adults enjoy classic car shows. Some of the largest car shows in Wisconsin are located on properties that have very uneven terrain (ex: grassy fields, gravel parking lots, hilly terrain). For some older adults, navigating this uneven terrain can be difficult for MANY reasons. We would love to be able to expand our community partnerships to provide our equipment to allow families to attend these car shows together regardless of mobility challenges. (nonprofit car shows)

Many of our network partners are hosting outdoor excursions for individuals experiencing dementia and memory loss. Mobility challenges is sometimes a comorbidity of dementia and without access to AAW equipment, family members would not be able to either 1) bring their loved one with dementia or 2) relax and worry less about their loved ones safety while navigating an uneven surface. Expanding our partnerships with programs providing outdoor experiences through dementia based outdoor programming would increase our impact.

In August, listen to Monica Spaeni, a guest on The Ideas Network on Wisconsin Public Radio [Livable Communities} https://www.wpr.org/disability-rights-advocates-work-toward-better-outdo...
AAW President, Spaeni discusses outdoors access in rural communities and how AAW got started with AARP’s Rural Lab Deep Dive representatives across the country. [Social Isolation]

To attend these events AAW needs a vehicle that can tow and be driven by its staff and volunteers. An accessible truck or van will make at least 100 opportunities available for individuals to volunteer in various capacities including driving/transporting equipment and volunteers.
