Cancer Care Packages

No veteran facing cancer should feel forgotten.

The Cancer Care Packages initiative of the Montford Point Marine Association NC Triad/Triangle Chapter 38 was created to offer comfort and encouragement to veterans receiving cancer treatment across our 22-county service area in North Carolina.

The need is significant. Among Veterans Health Administration users, cancer is the second-leading cause of death, following heart disease. Behind that statistic are veterans and families facing long treatment appointments, physical discomfort, fatigue, emotional strain, and days when even ordinary tasks become difficult. For older veterans, veterans living alone, and those with limited mobility or transportation, those challenges can feel even heavier.

Our care packages are thoughtfully assembled with items that can be used during treatment, while resting at home, or throughout recovery. Packages may include a soft throw blanket, warm socks, a cancer cap, unscented lotion and body wash, lip balm, a journal, puzzle or coloring books, stress-relief items, and a reusable drink container. Each package also includes a personal message of encouragement.

We serve veterans facing all forms of cancer. The initiative is not limited by diagnosis, age, gender, or branch of military service. We choose items that are practical, comforting, and suitable for people who may be sensitive to strong scents or experiencing changes caused by treatment.

Donations will help Chapter 38 purchase care items, package supplies, and the materials needed to prepare and deliver each package. Support will also allow us to reach veterans who are homebound or unable to attend an event because of their health, mobility, or transportation needs.

There are several ways to help. Individuals, employee groups, and community partners may make a financial contribution, purchase items from our wish list, sponsor a complete package, organize a collection drive, write encouragement cards, or volunteer during a package-assembly event.

Every item placed inside a package is chosen with a person in mind. A blanket may provide warmth during a long treatment appointment. A pair of soft socks may offer comfort on a difficult day. A handwritten note may arrive at the exact moment someone needs to be reminded that others are thinking of them.

Chapter 38 carries forward the legacy of the Montford Point Marines, the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Their courage, perseverance, and commitment to one another continue to shape how we serve today.

Through Cancer Care Packages, we are letting veterans know that their service is remembered, their dignity is honored, and they do not have to face cancer without the support of their community.
