Since 2019, the numbers of families needing food has increased radically. In addition to offering a store front pantry, we have also added a mobile pantry that parks at 6 locations a week. The 5 year plan developed by the WCM board in 2020 outlined a project to acquire a larger space for the pantry services. We have identified a 12,000 square foot 3 store building at 813 South Avenue and we are purchasing it, renovating it, and planning to open in early 2025. The new space will allow for more storage of food, easier access for our deliveries, and will provide easier access to our neighbors. The building, constructed in the 1950s, formerly housed the Wilkinsburg Telephone Exchange and the Boys & Girls Club of Wilkinsburg. Most recently it has been a private school.
Families needing our services have increased by 20% just between January - June 2024. The numbers will only increase. This is not simply a Covid problem, but a challenge within our food delivery system.
