SCS Impact Statement and Programs and Services Offered by SCS
Senior Community Services (SCS) promotes independent and meaningful living for older Delaware County residents. In a typical year, SCS’ broad range of community-based and in-home programs and services serves more than 25,000 county residents over the age of 60.
SCS provides seniors with:
Social Engagement/Lifelong Learning – Four nationally-accredited senior centers and an innovative Center Without Walls provide active and engaged older adults with opportunities to socialize with peers, learn new skills, maintain physical and mental health and participate in sports, games, arts and culture and other activities.
Nearly 8,000 older adults made 79,245 visits to SCS’ Chester, Friendship Circle, Good Neighbor, and Schoolhouse Centers.
1,067 brain fitness activities took place through our Cognitive Stimulation program in 2017-2018.
894 older adults participated in Center Without Walls activities in Aston, Brookhaven, Concord, and Springfield.
The Center for Lifelong Learning offers more than 100 day, evening, and weekend classes for adults every semester.
Healthy Meals – The county’s oldest and largest Home-Delivered Meal service and a robust Congregate Meal program together serve more than 140,000 healthy, nutritious meals.
SCS delivered 120,573 meals through Senior Suppers, a home-delivered meal service catering to the needs of frail elderly people.
SCS’ centers served 24,371 hot lunches, deli lunches and authentic Southern Grill meals to more than 1,100 unduplicated individuals.
Resources for Independent Living – Insurance counseling, care management, caregiver support services and aging in place services help more than 10,000 people live independently.
Nearly 10,000 seniors received health insurance counseling through the APPRISE program.
1,722 homebound seniors received support through SCS Care Managers.
642 handyman, transportation and chore services benefited 362 Aging at Home members.
169 caregivers received guidance and financial support through the Caregiver Support Program.
Volunteer Opportunities – More than 350 people volunteer with SCS, where they find fulfilling avenues for community engagement and provide more than 54,000 hours of service.

Jamee Nowell-Smith was named PA’s Senior Center Director of the Year (2018)
The APPRISE program was named Best Collaborator by the PA Department of Insurance (2015 & 2018)

Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit of the Year, 2023
Impact – More than 90% of SCS survey respondents agree or strongly agree that the services they receive from SCS help them maintain their independence and enjoy a better quality of life.
