We are a proud group composed of mothers whose sons and daughters serve in the military. We share a bond that fuels our commitment and deepens our drive to serve.
Our chapter, based in Baton Rouge, was officially chartered in March 2005 under the national organization, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. We are a support through service organization, devoted to assisting military families and raising awareness about their sacrifices.
The history of Blue Star Mothers of America is deeply rooted in the legacy of WWII and has been congressionally chartered since 1960. Our name originates from a tradition where families displayed a blue star in their windows to signify a family member in active service. Should the unspeakable happen, and a service member pay the ultimate sacrifice, the blue star would have a gold star sewn over it, a symbol meant to silently communicate the family's immense loss.
A key part of our mission is education. We offer five $1000 scholarships annually to continuing education, available to anyone actively serving in the military, retired, honorably discharged, National Guard and Reservists.
Our efforts include community activities such as Wreaths Across America, where we sponsor the Baton Rouge National Cemetery every December. Although the cemetery is permanently closed to internments, it remains the resting place for 5091 American Heroes. The earliest heroes date all the way back to the Battle of Baton Rouge in August of 1862.
One of the most poignant events that we host is the Memorial Day Garden of Flags at the Louisiana State Capitol. Imagine the sight - 11,000 American flags are held high, carried in ruck sacks of active duty, Veterans, National Guard and Reservist from the LSU Memorial Tower to the State Capitol and then gently planted in the garden by our community in sacred memory of our fallen heroes. This ceremony is not merely about remembrance; it is a public embrace, a tribute to the ultimate sacrifices made by our courageous men and women. It is also a promise to our Gold Star Families that their loss is not for them to carry alone as it has a collective impact on our hearts.
We are 100% volunteer. We are funded by donations and the generosity of corporate sponsors. Red, Rock & Blue is an annual softball tournament that host about 75 teams at Oak Villa BREC park in Baton Rouge and is hosted by Jacques Doucet. We have been selected as one of the recipients of this annual fundraiser by donating time to set up, concessions, gate keepers and clean up. It is larger that we can support with just our active members so we seek the support of our community to volunteer a couple of hours the last weekend in July each year.
