The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preventing asbestos exposure, eliminating asbestos-caused diseases, and protecting public health through evidence-based education, awareness initiatives, innovative communication, and community support. Founded in 2004 by Linda Reinstein and Doug Larkin after Linda’s husband, Alan, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, ADAO has grown into a global public health resource committed to ensuring that no individual, family, or community suffers from preventable toxic exposures. ADAO’s mission is rooted in the belief that prevention is the cure and that informed communities are safer communities. Despite decades of scientific understanding about the hazards of asbestos, exposure still occurs in workplaces, homes, schools, and public environments. ADAO addresses these gaps by providing trusted information, amplifying credible research, and equipping individuals, organizations, and communities with practical tools to understand and reduce risk. Education is central to ADAO’s work. The organization provides clear, accessible, and evidence-based public health information through national and international awareness campaigns, digital tools, fact sheets, social media outreach, and multilingual materials. Signature initiatives include Global Asbestos Awareness Week (April 1–7), community-focused prevention resources, the “Shared Stories” platform that elevates lived experiences of those affected by asbestos, and the AI-powered Asbestos Action Navigator and multilingual chatbot, designed to expand access to reliable, real-time prevention information worldwide. ADAO serves as a trusted stakeholder and resource to scientific and medical organizations, labor health and safety groups, congressional offices, federal and state agencies, and other public health partners. Through collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and educational communication, ADAO helps translate complex scientific research into accessible information for workers, families, and communities. The organization participates in scientific meetings, provides nonpartisan educational briefings, produces public health materials, and supports the exchange of best practices across disciplines. ADAO’s role is strictly educational and informational, grounded in scientific integrity and public health principles. Art and advocacy enrich ADAO’s mission. The organization integrates creative expression, visual communication, and storytelling to deepen understanding, honor lived experience, and elevate community voices. Through photography, illustration, public exhibitions, creative digital content, and the Shared Stories series, ADAO connects scientific information with the human impact of asbestos exposure. This art-informed approach strengthens awareness, builds empathy, and reinforces the organization’s commitment to education, prevention, and community healing. Community support is a core pillar of ADAO’s mission. ADAO honors and uplifts individuals and families impacted by mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases through peer support networks and remembrance events. The Mesothelioma Warrior Candle Lighting Tradition and the annual Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference provide meaningful spaces for connection, reflection, shared resilience, and learning.
