ALASKA LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION

Since 1967, Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) has provided free legal aid to Alaskans. Our mission is to provide meaningful access to justice in resolving civil legal problems for low-income clients, thus promoting family stability and reducing the legal consequences of poverty. ALSC helps families secure housing, access essential benefits, and address civil legal challenges that threaten safety, health, and well-being.
ALSC operates ten offices across the state in Anchorage, Bethel, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Nome, and Palmer and embeds staff in community partner organizations to provide holistic support. In 2024, ALSC handled nearly 5,300 cases that impacted more than 14,400 Alaskans. ALSC’s staff and volunteers served clients in over 200 communities, including rural and remote communities where legal resources are scarce.
ALSC assists with civil legal matters such as domestic violence protection orders, landlord-tenant disputes, foreclosure prevention, the denial or reduction of essential public benefits like food stamps, Medicaid, and Medicare, consumer rights, veteran issues, and end-of-life planning. The organization also provides legal education, online self-help resources, community outreach, and runs the state’s largest pro bono volunteer program.
ALSC extends its reach through innovative programs. The Community Justice Worker (CJW) program trains trusted local non-attorney advocates to identify and assist with everyday legal needs in rural and remote areas of Alaska where legal representation is difficult to find. Under ALSC supervision, CJWs can assist with legal areas like SNAP delays and denials, wills, and domestic violence protective orders. ALSC also runs the state’s only Medical-Legal Partnerships with Providence Alaska and the Alaska Native Medical Center, connecting patients facing legal barriers that impact their health to ALSC advocates.
