STATEMENT OF COMMUNITY NEED
Nearly half of all children in the United States are exposed to at least one social or family experience that can lead to traumatic stress and impact their healthy development. For adults, 61% of men and 51% of women report exposure to at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, with many reporting more than one. As the number of traumatic events experienced during childhood increases, the risk for the following health problems in adulthood increases: depression; alcoholism; drug abuse; suicide attempts; heart and liver diseases; pregnancy problems; high stress; uncontrollable anger; and family, financial, and job problems.

Samaritan Center is one of the largest nonprofit providers of mental health services in Central Texas. The scope of services—from early childhood to the elder years—stands as an accessible, affordable safety net for uninsured, low-income families. We strive to serve everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

Samaritan Center has vast experience in providing evidence-based, quality mental health treatment with a staff of highly-trained licensed mental health counselors. We take a holistic approach to care, offering integrative medicine to treat physical symptoms associated with emotional stress and mental illness; to nourish the spirit, clinicians are trained to be sensitive to a client’s unique spiritual and faith-based beliefs and needs. In recent years, professional training has focused on the importance of identifying childhood trauma as a primary indicator of mental illness. Our entire agency has been trained in trauma-informed care.
We have master’s level therapists who offer individual, family, couples and group therapy. We excel in treating all ages with expertise in several modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, play therapy, sand tray, and Theraplay. Entire families can be treated at a single location, and we have numerous satellite offices to increase access to care. We provide culturally-sensitive services in English and Spanish.
Our Integrative Medicine program provides treatment for the physical symptoms that often accompany stress and mental illness such as chronic pain and problems with sleep. These interventions include acupuncture, bio-feedback, nutrition counseling, herbal supplements and Pilates classes.
Samaritan Center’s Hope for Heroes program was established in 2007 helping veterans, service members, and their families overcome the emotional trauma of war and reintegrate into our community. The Military Veteran Peer Network is a statewide mental health outreach and suicide prevention network helping veterans and their families, who are often dealing with PTSD and TBIs, adjust to life post deployment.
HOW YOUR DONATION HELPS
All donations to Samaritan Center support accessible, affordable and evidence-based, trauma-informed mental healthcare and integrative medicine. We are able to offer scholarships and subsidies to individuals and families who are uninsured, underinsured or who simply cannot afford the full cost of our services. We believe there is a vital relationship between the mind, body, spirit and community in which a person lives. By addressing all of these needs, we can achieve optimal health.
