History: McKenna Farms Therapy Services was created in 2001 when one physical therapist assistant, Jessica Moore, began serving children with special needs. She provided hippotherapy and aquatic therapy with the help of five volunteers and two horses. McKenna Farms received its nonprofit 501(c)3 status in 2002. The organization has seen tremendous growth and, in fact, from 2009-2016, we’ve had an annual average growth of 20%. Today we have 23 therapists who see over 500 kids each week.
Program Overview: We are located on a 17-acre farm at the border between Cobb and Paulding counties. Families bring their children from throughout northwest Georgia and metro Atlanta because there is such a great need for our services and because we offer a child-friendly, home-like setting. No other therapeutic center in the region offers such comprehensive services in one location. We are also one of the few therapy centers in the region that accepts state-funded insurance, making us an essential resource for low-income families.
We serve boys and girls from birth-21 who have a variety of diagnoses and delays in development including, but not limited to: autism, sensory integration dysfunction, developmental delay, genetic/chromosomal disorders, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down Syndrome, traumatic brain injury, stroke, scoliosis, fine motor delay, oral/motor feeding disorders, learning and language disabilities, auditory processing, and coordination disorders.
Our therapists work as a team through comprehensive interdisciplinary services to help children with special needs achieve their fullest potential. We offer physical, occupational, and speech therapies in various settings including clinical, aquatic, and through the use of equine movement in hippotherapy and therapeutic riding. By offering all of these services (except for aquatic therapy) in one location, it is not only convenient for families, but it also allows us to provide the highest level of care as therapists can collaborate for the best interest of the children.
In addition to our therapy services, we also offer social skills groups, summer camps, a Special Olympics equestrian team, and a Horses Helping Heroes program for military veterans.
