Located between the local library and high school, Maynard House works closely with the healthcare and volunteer community in the Upper Valley area to provide a place where guests can feel safe and comfortable while focusing on crucial medical priorities. Maynard House is unique in its efforts to diminish the financial burden of access to healthcare by offering low-cost initial rates of $40 per person per night, which is significantly lower than other lodging options in the Upper Valley region. In addition to this subsidized rate, Maynard House also features the Rest-Easy Program, created by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, which works to further ease the burden of financially vulnerable guests. Through this program, we offer lower rates, and in some cases waive the fee entirely, based on need. We recognize the difficulties patients and families face in light of medical care needs and strive to alleviate the resulting stress and fear. There is inherent value in the services we provide. We also work with the Veteran’s Administration Hospital and other regional medical facilities to provide our services.
The U.S. Department of Health and World Health Organization both recognize the value of a people-centered approach to healthcare. Multiple scientific studies have acknowledged that "an emphasis on patient comfort and quality of life can improve patients' ability to tolerate medical treatments and help them feel more empowered in their care." At Maynard House we believe a philosophy of value-based care must extend beyond hospital doors to be its most effective. By providing a home-like environment separate from the clinical atmospheres where they are receiving treatment, patients are given a place to "come home to" even when they are far away from their home-base. Additionally, studies have shown a link between companionship and the healing process - in short, having a loved one nearby can actually speed up recovery
time in the face of a medical issue by providing a sense of calm through positive encouragement. Maynard House provides lodging not only for patients receiving treatment, but also for their caregivers and loved ones that support them through these difficult life moments.
Maynard House serves a community of people who often have no other place to go. Statistics from the American Health Association estimate that over 3.5 million patients in the U.S. go without medical care because they lack access to their provider, and Maynard House is one of the only independent organizations in the Upper Valley region working to alleviate this issue.
Over 28,000 guests from 44 states and various countries have stayed at Maynard House since its establishment, and it continues to be an “oasis”, providing a sense of “being back home” to people at a time when they need it the most. Testimonials regularly describe Maynard House as a “safe harbor to stay in when you are so worried and tired regarding your loved one,” a place for “solace and solidarity,” a “refuge.”
