Build RABID's Beetleweight Arena: Powering Bigger Battles & Deeper STEM Learning in Richmond

RabidRVA – Richmond Area Bot Instigated Destruction – is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit igniting passion for engineering and creativity through insect-weight combat robotics. We host thrilling, safe events featuring fairyweight, antweight, and now expanding to beetleweight classes to ensure accessibility and education.

Combat robotics is more than entertainment—it's a powerful STEM gateway. Builders learn real-world applications of physics (torque, momentum, impact forces), mechanical design, electronics, programming, fabrication, and teamwork under competitive pressure. Our events engage participants of all ages, with strong focus on youth from diverse backgrounds who gain confidence, problem-solving skills, and exposure to engineering careers.

Current Challenge & Opportunity
Our existing 6ft x 6ft antweight and 4ft x 4ft fairy arenas are fantastic for smaller classes, but beetleweight demands a larger, more robust setup (8ft x 8ft+ with thicker dual layer polycarbonate sheets and reinforced steel framing). Without it, we're limited in hosting beetleweight tournaments, reducing event variety and growth potential for the East Coast scene.

The $5,000 Goal: Beetleweight Arena Build
This targeted fundraiser will fund core materials and setup for a professional-grade beetleweight arena, enabling:

Larger-scale events with beetleweight divisions (monthly/quarterly tournaments).
Advanced workshops on scaling designs from ant to beetle (e.g., stronger drivetrains, weapon systems).
Increased capacity for public demos, school outreach, and partnerships (like ImmerseCon collaborations).
Safer, more immersive experiences with upgraded hazards, viewing platforms, and educational signage.

Polycarbonate shielding (dual 1/4" thickness for safety): $2,000
Steel/aluminum framing & structural supports: $1,200
Flooring, and Roofing materials: $800
Lightings and Electronics: $600
Tools, fasteners and hardware: $400

Measurable Impact
Host 4+ beetleweight-inclusive events in the first 12 months, serving 200+ builders/spectators annually.
Provide free/low-cost entry and mentorship for at least 40% youth/underrepresented participants.
Boost STEM engagement: Past events show participants reporting higher interest in engineering/tech fields.
Grow the Richmond combat robotics community, filling East Coast event gaps and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
