WHY THIS MATTERS: THE CRISIS BEHIND THE HUB

17 to 18 veterans die by suicide every single day in America. Veterans make up only 7% of the US population but account for nearly 14% of all suicide deaths in the nation. Since 2001, more than 120,000 veterans have been lost to suicide — more than all American combat deaths since Vietnam. In the first year after leaving military service, the veteran suicide rate reaches 46.2 per 100,000 — the most dangerous window in a veteran's life.

The cause is not a mystery. It is isolation. It is the loss of mission and purpose. It is the absence of the brotherhood that military service built and civilian life cannot replace. It is untreated PTSD, invisible wounds, and a broken transition into a civilian world that no longer speaks a veteran's language. More than 80% of post-9/11 veterans say the public doesn't understand what they go through after service. That disconnect kills.

The solution exists. Hundreds of extraordinary outdoor therapeutic programs operate across America — proven to reduce PTSD, rebuild community, restore purpose, and save lives. But veterans cannot access what they cannot find. That is the gap the National Veterans Outdoors Resource Hub was built to close.

WHY OUTDOOR THERAPY IS THE ANSWER

Nature heals what institutional systems cannot.

National Institutes of Health research confirms that veterans report lower stress and reduced PTSD symptoms after even a single day outdoors. A 2024 VA report on complementary and integrative health found that short outdoor experiences — walking, fishing, gardening — measurably lower cortisol and improve emotional regulation. Forest therapy, equine therapy, surfing, and sailing have all been shown to complement and enhance the effectiveness of Prolonged Exposure therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, EMDR, and medications. The Journal of Veterans Studies confirmed in 2025 that outdoor programs show strong potential to work alongside — and amplify — the best clinical PTSD treatments available.

But the science goes deeper than biochemistry. The single greatest loss veterans report after service is not income or structure — it is the unit. The brotherhood. The sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves. Research on long-term group nature therapy for veterans with chronic PTSD found that participants developed a group dynamic that specifically resembled a military unit — and that this camaraderie was a critical healing component. Shared challenge. Shared risk. Shared success. The outdoors gives veterans back the one thing no prescription can: a mission and the people to share it with.

Outdoor therapy also breaks the stigma barrier that keeps veterans from traditional care. Veterans will not walk into a therapist's clinic — they see it as weakness. But they will go fishing. They will go hunting. They will hike a trail, learn to surf, or trek through the mountains. Outdoor therapy reaches veterans that clinical systems cannot reach, because it does not ask them to admit they need help. It just asks them to show up.

And it treats the whole veteran — not just the diagnosis. PTSD, depression, isolation, addiction, and physical injury rarely arrive alone. Outdoor therapy addresses all simultaneously: physical health through activity, mental health through nature immersion, social health through shared experience, and spiritual health through connection to something larger than the self. The veteran who kayaks a canyon or lands a salmon doesn't come back with just reduced PTSD scores. They come back with stories. With friends. With a reason to go again.

THE SOLUTION: WE DON'T JUST LIST NONPROFITS. WE VALIDATE THEM.

At usvetconnect.com, honorably discharged veterans and their families connect directly to hundreds of vetted nonprofit organizations offering thousands of top-quality, free and highly subsidized outdoor adventures across all 50 states.

Any website can compile a list and call it a directory. We do something harder and more important: we vet every organization before a veteran ever sees their name. We review their programs, confirm they deliver exactly what they advertise, and validate that when a veteran shows up — for a fly fishing trip in Montana, a hog hunt in Texas, a surf therapy session in California, or a llama trek in Colorado — the experience is precisely what was promised. Real programs. Real organizations. Real adventures. Real healing.

Veterans have been let down enough. The National Veterans Outdoors Resource Hub exists to make sure that does not happen on our watch. No paywalls. No ads. No fees. No unvetted listings. Ever.

FROM MT. KILIMANJARO TO HOG HUNTS TO LLAMA RIDES — ALL VETTED, ALL FREE

Vetted mountaineering programs take veterans to the summits of the Rockies, the Cascades, the White Mountains — and yes, all the way to Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Vetted hiking programs place veterans on the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Maine and on the Pacific Crest Trail through California, Oregon, and Washington. Vetted hunting programs offer free hog hunts in the brush country of Texas, elk hunts in the backcountry of Montana and Wyoming, duck hunts in the flooded rice fields of Arkansas, and turkey hunts in the hardwood ridges of Virginia. Vetted fishing programs cover blue-ribbon trout streams in Montana, salmon rivers in Alaska, bass lakes in Texas and Florida, deep-sea charters off the Carolinas, and ice fishing on the frozen lakes of Minnesota. Vetted equine therapy and therapeutic horsemanship programs operate in nearly every state — and vetted llama trekking programs through the mountains of Colorado and the Pacific Northwest deliver healing that surprises even the most skeptical veteran. Vetted surf therapy runs on the breaks of Southern California, the Gulf Coast of Florida, and the beaches of Hawaii. Vetted whitewater rafting programs navigate the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and the Gauley River in West Virginia. Vetted adaptive skiing and snowboarding programs serve veterans at world-class resorts in Colorado, Utah, Vermont, and California. Vetted dog sledding programs run through the wilderness of Alaska and Minnesota, giving veterans the chance to lead a team and trust their instincts all over again.

And much more — all vetted, all confirmed, all free: archery, beekeeping, rock climbing, falconry, rodeos, pirate quests on the Gulf Coast, hot air ballooning over New Mexico, wilderness survival in the Boundary Waters, golf, music therapy, yoga and meditation retreats, service dog programs, gardening and agricultural therapy, and 40+ additional categories growing every month.

YOUR GIFT FUNDS THE ADVENTURE AND THE VETTING THAT MAKES IT SAFE TO TRUST

The Hub is free for veterans because donors make it possible. Your contribution funds the technology infrastructure that keeps usvetconnect.com running 365 days a year. It funds the vetting process that ensures every organization does what it says it does. It funds the outreach ensuring that veterans in rural Wyoming, urban Detroit, and suburban Virginia all know this resource exists and how to use it.

A veteran in Alaska finds a vetted salmon program and remembers what it means to be patient, present, and alive — because you gave. A veteran in Texas goes on a hog hunt with a vetted nonprofit and comes home with the best story they've told in years — because you gave. A veteran in Colorado treks through the mountains with a llama and laughs for the first time in longer than they can remember — because you gave.

You are not writing a check. You are turning the Wheel.

All contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent allowable by law.
