Equitherapy strengthens the bodies, minds, and spirits of all program participants, no matter where they are on their healing journey. This is because the healing energy of the human-horse bond is so strong that clients respond to equitherapy with an enthusiasm that cannot be matched in a traditional therapeutic environment. Horses accept each person unconditionally, no questions asked. Once they are mounted, riders experience freedom of motion, competence, and confidence. Empowered to explore their abilities and achieve new levels of self-worth, clients grow beyond their physical, cognitive, and emotional limitations. They strive to reach their highest potential and become their best selves. They joyfully respond to the healing interaction with their Triple H therapy team—certified instructors, trained volunteers, a licensed professional counselor, and therapy horses.
The horse is the motivator that encourages clients to work longer and harder at therapy than in a traditional clinical setting. The horse is the catalyst for change.
Triple H Equitherapy has enjoyed close ties with the San Antonio military/Veterans community since it was founded in 1995 by a retired USAF Colonel, Kent Harbaugh, and his wife, Kathy. Triple H has provided equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) to military Veterans and active service personnel since 2008 when Mat Trotter, an intern with The Mission Continues, came to Triple H to start a program specifically designed to help wounded war Veterans. Since then, Triple H has been offering services to injured service men and women with every type of injury—from physical injuries to the invisible wounds of war. During these years of experience, Triple H has been honored to work with many Veterans and to listen to them describe their experiences, needs, and expectations. Triple H has learned about their needs directly from wounded Veterans with physical and/or mental health disabilities and by evaluating the positive outcomes these Veterans have enjoyed as a result of the healing power of the horse-human bond. Triple H continues to collaborate with organizations serving veterans such as the Wounded Warrior Project, the Kerrville VA Hospital, Audie Murphy VA Hospital, and the Warrior Transition Unit at the San Antonio Medical Center (formerly BAMC). These organizations have helped identify the need among Veterans of all eras for equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP).
Today, many Veterans with PTSD find live-changing benefits by participating in our Horse Power for Veterans and Their Families program. It provides horse-facilitated psychotherapy tailored to address the social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs of individual Veterans and their families.
Triple H’s other core programs include: (1) Horsemanship First: This ground (dismounted) program focuses on horse care and dismounted activities. Many seniors start with this program and advance towards therapeutic horseback riding. (2) Hooves, Hearts & Heroes: This is a collaborative program with area schools providing experiential learning and therapeutic riding for special needs/life skills students. Many of these students have cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and developmental delays. (3) Riding to Independence: This program offers therapeutic riding for individuals with physical, cognitive, emotional, and mental health challenges. It is especially effective for young people who have Autism. (4) From Fear to Responsibility: Designed for at-risk youth who have experienced trauma from caustic life experiences, this program helps young people age 12-17. They learn how to develop healthy relationships with their therapy horses, themselves, other people, and the world around them.
In the greater San Antonio area, Triple H Equitherapy is one of only two nonprofit centers that are fully accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH, Intl.) As a premier accredited center, Triple H adheres to the highest industry standards of safety and professionalism.
